Things To Do

Nestled at the foot of Mt Kosciuszko National Park, the Tumut Region is the gateway to the northern end of the Snowy Mountains.  With its four very distinct seasons, it is an area that abounds in natural attractions.

Fishing

It's a fisherman's dream come true with plenty of trout fishing available in the Tumut River or the many creeks and dams.  The Tumut River, Talbingo and Jounama Dam tributaries are open for fishing from the beginning of October long weekend to the end of the June long weekend.  The dams are open all year.  The Murray Crayfish season runs from May to August (regulations do apply so it's a good idea to seek some local advice first).  Within the Kosciuszko National Park, anglers can try their luck at Yarrangobilly River or Jounama Creek.

The Snowy Mountains Scheme

Tumut is an ideal location for those wishing to visit the Snowy Mountains Scheme - one of the great engineering wonders of the modern world.  Visitors can take a tour at Tumut 3 Power Station in Talbingo, or there are visitor centres and viewing areas placed throughout the mountain.  While here, why not visit Cabramurra, the original township constructed to house Scheme construction workers and their families.  You can also take a drive to the lookout for one of the best views in the mountains.  The Snowy Mountains Scheme consists of 16 major dams, seven power stations, a pumping station, 145 kms of interconnected tunnels and 80 kms of aqueducts.

Water-Sports

Among the many rivers, you'll find the ideal spot to go canoeing or swimming, while the many lakes and dams provide a wide choice for those looking for more vigorous activity such as water skiing or wake boarding.

Bush Walking and Mountain Bike Riding

The Tumut State Forest Walking Trails will provide plenty of exercise for those wishing to explore the many kilometres of native bushland tracks.  Bushwalk or mountain bike - your choice. There's also the scenic Tumut Tree Walk which follows the Tumut River Walk .  Along the way, you'll see a number of botanical name plates identifying the variety of species  along the Walks.

For the more adventurous among you, how about a trek into the high country?  You'll see pioneer huts, mountain streams and plenty of local flora and fauna.  The Tumut Valley also provides access to various points along the Hume and Hovell Walking Track.

There's a number of Walks available, so visit the Tumut Region Visitor Centre for information on a walk to suit you.

Winter Sports

The Selwyn Snowfields are a great day out for the family.  Only an hour's drive from Tumut, you can take the family and spend the day tobogganing, downhill or cross-country skiing, or just having fun building snowmen and throwing snowballs.

Cultural

Visit the Tumut & District Historical Society Museum and let your imagination take you through the town's pioneering history as you view some fascinating information about farm and domestic life .  There are also some magnificent old buildings among the town's churches, its pubs and the courthouse.  The Broom Factory in Tumut is the last remaining one in Australia, and still produces brooms for sale.  It has been in operation since 1946.

The Montreal Community Theatre, run entirely by volunteers, stages regular theatre and musical events throughout the year.

Follow the Heritage Trail, which connects the museums and towns of Adelong, Tumut and Batlow.  The Trail follows main roads and historic sites of interest are marked on the map.

Yarrangobilly Caves

The Yarrangobilly Caves are situated about 75 kms from Tumut, on the Snowy Mountains Highway.  Open for regular guided or self guided tours daily, they are some of the most beautiful limestone caves to be found in Australia.

Adelong Falls Gold Mill Ruins

Visit the Site of the Reefer Battery, built in 1869/70.  A self-guided walking tour takes you along the Adelong Creek to the historic ruins.  Before visiting the Gold Mill Ruins, it is well worth visiting the Adelong Alive Museum first to learn the history of the site.

Boggy Creek

Well worth a visit!  Tim, who happens to be a fourth generation mountain cattleman, will keep you entertained with animal antics and the history of Boggy Creek.  The 2 hour show  contains many aspects of rural life - mustering, whip cracking, shearing, working dogs and horsemanship.  We've had rave reviews from groups who have attended the show.  Performances 7 days a week for groups and individuals but bookings are essential.

Tumut Valley Violets

Situated 7 kilometres from Tumut, Tumut Valley Violet's is a major tourist attraction set on the grounds of the old Tumut Plains School House.  Boasting over a thousand named varieties of African Violets,  you can also find a range of hand-crafted pottery, ceramics and terracotta, as well as garden ornaments, paintings, craft and souvenirs.  The garden cafe is open daily and renowned for its scrumptious home-made Devonshire Teas and great coffee.
